As part of its Common Values campaign and to mark international Human Rights Day on 10 December 2010, Liberty has launched a Liberty Schools Creative Writing Competition: Write Human Rights.
Why the Human Rights Act? Although the Human Rights Act is often misquoted and maligned in adult society, the rights and values it defends – fairness, equality, privacy, dignity and respect – often mirror those we look to encourage in our children. Liberty hopes that providing an opportunity for real engagement and understanding of the content and meaning of the Act will broaden respect for the essential rights and freedoms it upholds and protects, and what these mean for every one of us. For an interactive guide to the articles of the Human Rights Act and what they mean in plain English, visit www.love.commonvalues.org.uk
Entrants are being asked to write a short piece of poetry or prose inspired by any or all of the articles within the Act. An entry could be as much as the word-limit (150 – 250 words depending on age category) or as little as a sentence.
The winners will be announced in early July 2011. Entries will be judged by a panel of literary experts, including best-selling author and twice Booker-prize nominated author Ali Smith, best-selling children’s author Georgia Byng, author of best-selling teen superspy series Anthony Horowitz and publisher Simon Prosser. The winning entry will receive up to £500 to spend on books for their school and the chance to read their winning entry at a prestigious award ceremony in 2011.
Write Human Rights is open to any student that is a resident of Great Britain and aged between 4-16yrs. There are two categories for entry: ages 4-10 yrs and 11-16 years. Entries must be submitted by a Teacher, Tutor, Mentor, Youth Club Organiser or Parent/Guardian (if home educated) on behalf of their students. Teachers normally submit entries as part of a whole-class activity.
To register your school to take part in the competition please email a contact name, the name of your school, a contact email address and postal address to mailto://schools@liberty-human-rights.org.uk
Registration will close, and the competition will open for entries from Monday 28 February. The deadline for submissions will be 27 May 2011.

Over the past 6 months, the Fusion Youth Group, based on the Middlegate Estate, have been working on a photography project alongside the Comeunity Team and the Middlegate Community Association. The funding for the project was obtained through the Your South Yarmouth, Your Decision 2009-2010 Participatory Budgeting programme, which saw local residents in South Yarmouth vote for and allocate funding towards the project.
During this time, the young people received training in photography from a GY College Tutor, and took hundreds of photos of their local community, which were shown in early November in the Rumbelow Gallery in Great Yarmouth Library.
Apart from the 50 plus photos that were on display, the young people also put together a delightful brochure of the photos taken during the project, and this is still available to pick up at the current Transitions exhibition at the gallery, on until the 19th November.
The young people also participated in workshops run by poet Rupert Mallin and young filmmaker Jade Yaxley. The decided they wanted to explore bullying past and present, and did this through cartoon, words, a visit to the Tolhouse Museum, and film. Emily Payne edited the film material they produced to create a short video posted to You Tube:

There are six students involved in the exciting Transitions project. We have been to the Great Yarmouth archives and have selected artworks/images that will inspire our responses to the contemporary view of the Great Yarmouth and Gorleston area. Several students have already identified areas of interest and Enya and Ellen have interviewed members of the public in Great Yarmouth to gain their views on the area. Enya is interested in looking at the contrast between the natural environment and the built environment while looking at and being inspired by the local artist Anthony Aimies. If anyone has any background information of him please add a comment.
Jack is intersted in textiles and fashion and has made an appointment at Carrow House to look at the collection. At the moment Jack is interested in Victorian costumes.
Hannah is interested in the equipment and clothing worn by lifeboat men in the past and the present day.
Charlotte is intersted in beach huts and textured wood. We are interested in learning what type of belongings people keep in their beach huts.
Ellen is looking for found objects – found on the beach or are marine related for an installation. Any one with any artefacts or driftwood etc would be appreciated.
Alissa is interested in photographs and local trades and trades people. How traditional trades compare with modern trades.
Anyone with any comments or images that they can share with us to help us with our research would be greatly appreciated. Please contact us by comemnt. Thank you.
