Great Yarmouth Local History and Archaeological Society have published their 2012 Lecture Programme.  Lectures are held in the Northgate Room at the Central Library, Great Yarmouth, at 7.30 pm.

January 20th.  Six 10 minutes talks on various topics by Society Members

March 16th Milestones and Signposts in Norfolk, talk by Carol Haines
April 20th The East Anglian Manuscripts, talk by Margaret Forrester
May 18th AGM and a talk on Great Yarmouth Speedway by David McDermott

September 21st The Paston Letters, inc. the Siege of Caister Castle, by Dr. Helen Castor
October 19th First Cast Your ASP, the pathology of the death of Medieval Kings, by Dr. Philip Stone
November 16th The Find of a Lifetime, stories behind buried treasure in East Anglia, by Mark MItchels
December 21st  Concrete Cockrill by Ann Dunning, followed by Christmas Social

Great Yarmouth Choral Society

Rehearsals have started for the Society’s next concert, Faure’s Requiem and Vivaldi’s Gloria.  The Society meets on Monday evenings, 7.30 p.m., at Oriel High School, Gorleston.  New members are always welcome – contact Jane Freeman on 01493 843816 or simply turn up on the night.

The Great Yarmouth Local History and Archaeological Society was founded in 1888. With a membership of 150, the Society is a charitable organisation whose aim is to promote the Local History and Archaeology of the district and to secure the preservation of historic buildings. The Society publishes a newsletter and journal and runs a programme of eight lectures between October to May and summer visits.

The first meeting of 2009-10 season is on Friday 16th October at the Central Library, Tolhouse Street , when photographer and historian Trevor Burlingham is delivering a lecture on East Anglian Defences in 1940.

Poetry Competition for Quill

Quill Creative writing group are having a presentation tomorrow 14th Oct. of a Trophy cup to the winner of the 2009 Ernest Peaford award. Their yearly poetry competition for their members. They were lucky to have the poems judged by Rupert Mallin. The winner for the second year running is Tamara Minns with her poem called “Enigma” . Second place goes to myself with my poem called “Hail to the Sea”, and third place goes to Charles Huggett with his poem called “Waves”. The theme this year was on The Sea and there were 14 entries. Ernest Peaford’s son Peter will present the trophy and framed certificates to the three winners. We are hoping to have a photograph printed into the Great Yarmouth Mercury to mark the occasion.

Further news, One of our members Susan Wooden has been chosen as a runner up in the poetry competition to commemorate Herring Day. Her poem will be read out on Sunday Oct 18th at the celebration at the Time and Tide museum. Well done Susan.


Great Yarmouth Guild of Artists and Craftsmen

The Great Yarmouth Guild of Artists and Craftsmen will celebrate its 60th Anniversary with a show of 200 paintings at the newly refurbished Exhibition Galleries at the newly refurbished Central Library. The exhibition is open from 16th – 24th October, 10.00 – 17.00 hrs. (closed Sundays).


Central Library Gallery reopens

The refurbished gallery space at the Central Library, Great Yarmouth, is now open.  The Great Yarmouth and District Society  is the first to take advantage of the new open-plan space with their 82nd  annual exhibition, which will open ready for the Maritime Festival on the 5th September.  The exhibition continues until the 12th September (except Sunday), 10-17 hrs, 19.30 hrs on Wednesday.

Great Yarmouth Keyboard Music Club

Formed in June 1971, and now having a membership base of 65 members, the Great Yarmouth Keyboard Music Club hosts recitals on the third Wednesday of the month at the Masonic Royal Assembly Rooms. John Holmes Memorial Trust

Students from the Borough of Great Yarmouth who will be starting a full-time degree course in art in September 2009 are invited to apply to The John Holmes Memorial Trust for a grant to assist with the purchase of materials and equipment.  The award is availabe to students who will be studying fine art, drawing or sculpture. 

John Holmes was a former president of the Great Yarmouth and District Society of Artists and the successful candidate for this award will also be offered free membership of the Society for two years.  To apply for the grant call 01493 667869.


GREAT YARMOUTH CHORAL SOCIETY

The Great Yarmouth Choral Society is presenting its Summer Concert at St. Nicholas Parish Church at 7.30 p.m. on Saturday 20th June.   Tickets are available at the door.   The programme is  Haydn, Little Organ Music; Poulenc, Gloria; selected choruses from Mendelssohn’s Elijah.  The soprano soloist is Hannah Long who won Norfolk Musician of the Year in 2003 before successfully auditioning for a place at the Guildhall School of Music. 

The Great Yarmouth Choral Society, directed by John Stephens, gives two public performances a year.  Rehearsals are on Monday evenings at Oriel High School, mainly during term time   For more information go to www.gychoral.org.uk.
