100 million years in Norfolk - a Norfolk Wildlife Trust talk at Great Yarmouth Library on Wednesday 23 November (Northgate Room, 2-3.30pm), looking at the prehistory  of the region now called Norfolk and how through examining fossil and archaeological records we can discover what our landscape looked like and what wildlife inhabited the county, also about where fossil evidence has been found in Norfolk and how humans eventually came to live here.  The talk is free, no need to book.

Further events this Autumn Season are:

Founded in 1948, we have around 30 members, meeting every Wednesday evening at St Mary Magdalene Church Hall, Magdalene Square, Gorleston, NR31 7BZ  from September to April and outside at photo-friendly venues in the summer.

The majority of members use digital photography in one form or another, though we still have members working with traditional black & white and colour negative film. New members are welcomed what ever their interests or level of expertise. An exhibition of members’ work is held annually and smaller exhibitions are held from time to time as opportunities arise. (There will be an exhibition at Gt Yarmouth Library Galleries from 24th to 29th September).

Fusion

"Fusion"

Over the past 6 months, the Fusion Youth Group, based on the Middlegate Estate, have been working on a photography project alongside the Comeunity Team and the Middlegate Community Association. The funding for the project was obtained through the Your South Yarmouth, Your Decision 2009-2010 Participatory Budgeting programme, which saw local residents in South Yarmouth vote for and allocate funding towards the project.

During this time, the young people received training in photography from a GY College Tutor, and took hundreds of photos of their local community, which were shown in early November in the Rumbelow Gallery in Great Yarmouth Library.

Apart from the 50 plus photos that were  on display, the young people  also put together a delightful brochure of the photos taken during the project, and this is still available to pick up at the current Transitions exhibition at the gallery, on until the 19th November.

The young people also participated in workshops run by poet Rupert Mallin and young filmmaker Jade Yaxley.  The decided they wanted to explore bullying past and present, and did this through cartoon, words, a visit to the Tolhouse Museum, and film.  Emily Payne edited the film material they produced to create a short video posted to You Tube:

Abbey Pottery Revealed, King St., 28.10.09

Abbey Pottery Revealed, King St. 28.10.09, B.Heriz

Work is growing apace in the renovation of King Street.  This old shop facade was revealed last week.   There is an article in the 30.10.09 edition of  the Mercury about riverside developments in Cobholm, which could begin in 18 months time:  Bure Harbour Quay will provide flats and town houses on the riverfront, though Cobholm residents are being asked to give their views first before planning permission can be granted.

Also announced in the Mercury is news about Great Yarmouth’s historic Vauxhall Bridge, with hopes that it can be restored as a pedestrian gateway to the town. Norfolk County Council engineers, who are working on a feasibility study looking at a range of options for the River Bure bridge, have been given vital extra breathing status by the scheme’s potential funder.

Far-reaching changes in the built environment will suddenly be upon us and it would be nice to collect an archive of images before these take place.  Any contributions would be welcome – please email jpgs to b.herizsmith@btinternet.com, or  log on to the site as a contributor to start posting for yourself!    Drawings/paintings  would be very welcome indeed, just email to the above address if help is needed to scan or photograph images for uploading to the site.
