It was announced in the Mercury, July 17th 2009, that work on improving King Street is likely to begin in October. Having secured £8m funding for the regeneration of this historic area, the Council has completed a conservation and management plan which is set to be formally adopted by the Council on Wednesday 22nd July.
St. George’s Chapel will be restored as a multi-purpose cultural venue, pavements will be widened and a one way system created with the parallel Deneside. There are 35 listed buildings in King Street and many historic features that will be preserved as a result of this scheme.
Given the considerable changes that are about to take place, it might be an interesting project to collect a library of drawings, paintings, prints and photographs, poems, songs of and about the area as it now is. Anybody who has material they would like to publish on EastCoastNet please send to eastcoastnet@btinternet.com. If there is enough material, perhaps it could form the basis of an exhibition/event on the theme.
