"Delicious Ice Cream by Jane Hall"

Delicious Icecream, by Jane Hall

No trip to the seaside would be complete without a 99, or Knickerbocker glory, and having lived by the seaside for most of her life, it is no surprise that Norfolk-based artist, Jane Hall, makes ice cream a central theme in her work. She grew up in Clacton before moving to Great Yarmouth as a teenager – both traditional British seaside resorts – and now just lives just a two-minute walk from Great Yarmouth’s busy seafront, with its numerous ice cream sellers and beach-side cafes.

“I first started taking an interest in ice creams while planning my first major solo show last year,” Jane explains.

“I want to capture the fun of the seaside, painting popular culture, while at the same time evoking the nostalgia we all feel for the British seaside holiday. For me ice creams are a symbol of the British holiday and of the seduction of adverts, which is a key theme in my work. All the ice creams I paint I have eaten and enjoyed; except the plastic ones”.

Jane will also be exhibiting at the Fisher gallery in Bungay for the month of July and in Great Yarmouth library. 19th September -1st October. www.jane-hall.co.uk

Jane has worked as a professional artist since graduating with a BA (hons) in Art History and German from Nottingham University in the late 90s. After several group shows in the Norfolk area, this year she will be holding her first major solo show, Seaside Sensation, at Great Yarmouth Library (12 – 21 November 2009 .) The event is being sponsored by NWES, Bookers of Great Yarmouth and Great Yarmouth Glass.

“Above all, I am interested in colour and realism and capturing the essence of my subject in a modern way, while at the same time celebrating the inherent nostalgia evoked by the traditional British seaside holiday, with all its buckets and spades, sandcastles, ice creams, fish and chip shops and amusement arcades.”

Jane is represented by the Chelsea Art Gallery in London.  To contact Jane:  tel. 07903 580399. Her website is www.jane-hall.co.uk.
