"Alfred Wallis flyer"

This is a unique opportunity to see on show in Great Yarmouth  an extensive selection of Wallis’s works from the Kettle’s Yard Collection. Alfred Wallis was an ex-fisherman who painted in St. Ives, where he was discovered and admired by Ben Nicholson and other artists of the modern school.

Creative events offered at the Time and Tide to accompany this beautifully presented show are:

Join the artist in residence on the second Sunday of every month to hunt for Wallis on a trail around the Museum and win a paint brush. Be inventive and create your own Alfred Wallis inspired artwork.

The current temporary exhibition at the Time and Tide (until 11th November 2012) is You are Here: The world in Great Yarmouth, exploring and celebrating Great Yarmouth’s links with the world.  People, stories, journeys, objects and memories all come together to reflect the vibrant identity of the town today.

The Tolhouse Museum with its historic Gaol and the 16th Century and the Elizabethan Museum are open from 1st April.  If you visit any one of these museums, there is a discounted entry to the other two.   For further information about Great Yarmouth Museums, including opening times and admission prices,  go to www.museums.norfolk.gov.uk  or email yarmouth.museums@norfolk.gov.uk or tel. 01493 743930. 

The Nelson Museum at 26 South Quay is open  February to November Monday – Friday 10am – 4pm and Saturday & Sunday 1pm – 4pm.  For more information go to  www.nelson-museum.co.uk/

The wonderful English Heritage Great Yarmouth Row Houses next door on South Quay are open from 1st April Monday to Friday 11am – 4 pm, closed Saturday and Sunday except Good Friday and Easter Monday (but not Easter Sunday), open 11am – 4pm and other holidays.  For more information click here for the Great Yarmouth page on the EH website.

Independent museums in Great Yarmouth are Ernie and Karen Child’s private museum collection in the labyrinthine Great Yarmouth Potteries and Smokehouse and Valerie Howkin’s private collection including toys and royal memorabilia in King Street, just south of St. George’s.  Commercial museums are Yesterday’s World on Marine Parade and Louis Tussauds Wax Museum on Regent Road.

Museum events in May and June are:
Library Garden Jubilee Party on Friday 25th May, 3.00-5.00 pm:  Crowns and tiaras  – craft activity at the Tolhouse Museum nearby the library garden in Tolhouse St. , where other events are also taking place to celebrate the Jubilee.

A Right Royal Reminisce over Half Term, Friday 1st June, 2-4pm, at the Time & Tide Museum:  Commemorate this year’s Diamond Jubilee with a special look at Great Yarmouth’s collections and memorabilia, exploring our local links to the Royal Family.

‘That’s the way to do it’, a puppet workshop at the Time and Tide Museum, 6th June, 11am – 4pm. Be inspired by toys from the past to design and create your own puppet theatre. Watch Rollo’s traditional punch and Judy show, the original seaside entertainment.

Exploring Explorers at the Time and Tide Museum on Friday 8 June, 11am – 4pm. A day of activities exploring objects which have been brought back to Yarmouth by intrepid explorers and are now on display in our You are Here exhibition.

Events at the Time and Tide Museum for Easter 2012 include:

Science ‘Eggs-perimiters’: Tuesday 3rd April and Wednesday 4th April – a 2 day event fuill of scientific experiments and demonstrations that will amaze and inspire children of all ages.

Identify Yourself: Wedensday, 11th April – exploring masks from the museum collections on display in the YOU ARE HERE exhibition, and creating own masks.

The YOU ARE HERE exhibition in the temporary gallery is on from 31st March to 11th November 2012 and explores the journeys of people and objects to Great Yarmouth, celebrating both the cultural diversity of the museum collections and the communities that shape the town in the 21st Century.  Entrance to the exhibition is free with normal museum admission.

Experience Days at Great Yarmouth Museums

Great Yarmouth Museums are offering a schedule of five unique one-day workshops in February and March, with behind the scenes access to the museum collections and sessions with the curator, a costume designer and artists in residence.  The days are fully catered with lunch and refreshments.  Materials and equipment are included in the £45 fee.  The events are delivered in partnership with Norfolk Adult Education and the Community Partnerships Forum.  Advance booking is required, call 01493 743930.

8th February 2012  Undressing Queen  Elizabeth 1
An exploration of Elizabethan costume and a look at the sonnets and poetry that give insight into love and lust in the Tudor England.

15th February 2012 Costumes and Creativity
A chance to explore the stored collection of costume, textiles and accessories held in the museums and to work with a designer to make your own 1960′s handbag whilst learning the tricks of the trade.

29th February 2012 Inspiring Seascapes
Gt. Yarmouth Museums has a stunning collection of seascapes in its art collection, ranging from Cotman to Maggie Hambling.  Philip Harvey is artist in residence on this workshop and will teach the techniques used to create such artworks.

7th March, 2012 Hand Painted Glass
Based on the collection of ornate decorative glass at the Elizabethan House Museum,  this workshop will teach techniques to enable you to create your own painted glass.

14th March 2012 The Secrets of Watercolours
A great opportunity to explore the reserve art collection kept in store, with explanation of the techniques used in watercolour paintings provided by an artist in residence.

Victorian Christmas at the Elizabethan House

The evening begins with a delicious seasonal buffet supper and a glass of mulled wine. Afterwards we will keep you entertained with a music hall medley of song and dance with the glamorous Rachel Duffield and friends.

MEDIEVAL MONDAYS at the Tolhouse Museum, 25th July – 29th August, 11.00-16.00 hrs.

Fun days for the family through the summr season at the Tolhouse Museum, including meeting the gaoler and hearing from a 12th century prisoner of the cells with grm and grisly tales of the plaque.  Creative activities as well.

TUDOR TALES on Thursdays at the Elizabethan House Museum, 28th July – 1st September, 12.00-1600 hrs.

Learn about and try the costumes at the Elizabethan House Museum; learn to write with quill pens and also abut some of the grizzlier aspects of life in Tudor times.

All events at the Tolhouse and Elizabethan House Museums are included in admission ticket price: adults £3.70, concession £3.10, young person (4-16)  £2, children under 4 free.

Summer Holiday Events at the Time and Tide Museum

Cartoon Workshops, every Monday from 25th July – 29th August, 12.00-16.00 hrs. Learn skills of the cartoonist, suitable for all ages.

Science at the Seaside, Monday 8th August, 12.00-16.00 hrs. Great interactive fun in association with ‘Inspire’: experiments and demonstrations that will engage and amaze children of all ages.

Hello Campers! Saturday 20th August, 11.00-16.o0 hrs. Discover how holiday makers of the past had fun on a budget.  Enjoy a day of activities, performance, talks, and good old-fashioned seaside fun.    Meet the swing-dancing group and see them performing at the museum, doing demonstrations and workshops.
