Retroskate Annual Gala

Retroskate (Marine Parade, Great Yarmouth) is holding its annual gala on 26th -27th November.  The event includes figure skating, basic skills, free, duo free, novelty and club show and will include an exhibition from Christopher Fox, the current Great Britain Junior champion. . RetroSkate (GY) Community Interest Company has been established to the provide the residents and visitors of Great Yarmouth a dedicated roller skating venue. The status of the CIC means thats we provide benefit to the community and is a form of Social Enterprise.

Great Yarmouth has a vast history in roller skating and has produced more national champions as a percentage of population than anywhere else in the country. The loss of facilities, some 20 years ago came as a great shock to the town as it was still extremely popular. Small artistic groups struggled on by using community sports halls. RetroSkate has develooped from one of these sessions run by North Sea Rollers with the collaboration of 4 people who bring together a wealth of experience and qualifications in both work and roller skating. We are passionate about roller skating and the many benefits it brings its participants at all ages and levels. It is also an activity that the whole family can participate in. Plus, Its FUN!

Victorian Christmas at the Elizabethan House

Wednesday 7 December, 7 – 10pm

The evening begins with a delicious seasonal buffet supper and a glass of mulled wine. Afterwards we will keep you entertained with a music hall medley of song and dance with the glamorous Rachel Duffield and friends.

Composer, clarinettist and thoroughly good egg, Karen Wimhurst is coming to Waveney & Blyth Arts event which is on from 10.30 to 3.30 on Saturday 12th November at The Cut, Halesworth!

Karen will be telling people at the event more about the new Waveney & Blyth musical work she is working on with singer and choir leader Sian Croose to be performed by a Waveney & Blyth wonder choir as part of the 2012 September “Celebrate the Waveney & Blyth” festivities.

“Astonishing new voice” poet Joanna Guthrie – the wordsmith for Waveney & Blyth Arts new musical commission – will be coming too! – and hopefully reading a couple of poems from her “extraordinary first collection” “Billack’s Bones”.

At Waveney & Blyth Arts launch last November members said their top priority was to get a web site off the ground – and we have – http://waba.mustarddev.co.uk

And this November we are launching our new multimedia web site, designed by “Mustard Creative” – that will morph into a new Waveney & Blyth Arts monthly multimedia magazine.

At our launch last November we talked about organising new Waveney & Blyth celebrations in September 2011 – and we did.

Hear about the 1,000 plus people who came to the 30 different art, craft, poetry, music and other events and activities we organised (and publicised in many ways including 8,000 12 page booklets) and help us shape next year’s programme.

A talk on nuclear testing

St. Nicholas Church Preservation Trust will be presenting a talk on nuclear testing in the 1950′s, delivered by somebody who was there – Revd. John  Walden, a re tired  Church of England minister, who was serving in the  British Combined Forces in 1957 when he was sent to a remote part of Australia to participate in a series of nuclear tests.  He received an overdoes of radiation at the time and later became a founding member of the East of England British Nuclear Tests Veteran Association. 

Revd. John Walden will be giving his talk at 7.30 pm on Friday 11th November 2011 at the Furzedown Hotel, North Drive, Yarmouth.  Tickets are £10 (includes sausages and mash) and can be bought in advance from Brahams, Market Row or by phoning Paul Davies on 01493 343647.

Hallowe’en Events

A special hallowe’en evening event at the Tolhouse Musum on Saturday, October 29th.  Experience the eerie atmosphere of  Great Yarmouth’s oldest civic building:  meet Solomon Allies, the Victoria gaoler, and hear his spine tingling tales!  Free Admission from 5 pm  to 7 pm..  For more information Click here

Blessing the Nets

St. Nicholas Church Preservation Trust is again hosting the Blessing of the Nets Service and Herring Snack on Sunday 2nd October 2011 at 6.30pm in the church. The service features sea songs by the Masquers and a talk on the fishing and its connection with the church by Margaret Gooch the Secretary of Great Yarmouth Archaeological Society.

The herring snack includes cooked, rollmop and marinated herrings, potato salad and bread rolls. Wine and Beer will be available. Tickets are £5 from Paul Davies, 01493 843647, or Brahams in Market Row.

Great Yarmouth Museums Summer Events

MEDIEVAL MONDAYS at the Tolhouse Museum, 25th July – 29th August, 11.00-16.00 hrs.

Fun days for the family through the summr season at the Tolhouse Museum, including meeting the gaoler and hearing from a 12th century prisoner of the cells with grm and grisly tales of the plaque.  Creative activities as well.

TUDOR TALES on Thursdays at the Elizabethan House Museum, 28th July – 1st September, 12.00-1600 hrs.

Learn about and try the costumes at the Elizabethan House Museum; learn to write with quill pens and also abut some of the grizzlier aspects of life in Tudor times.

All events at the Tolhouse and Elizabethan House Museums are included in admission ticket price: adults £3.70, concession £3.10, young person (4-16)  £2, children under 4 free.

Summer Holiday Events at the Time and Tide Museum

Cartoon Workshops, every Monday from 25th July – 29th August, 12.00-16.00 hrs. Learn skills of the cartoonist, suitable for all ages.

Science at the Seaside, Monday 8th August, 12.00-16.00 hrs. Great interactive fun in association with ‘Inspire’: experiments and demonstrations that will engage and amaze children of all ages.

Hello Campers! Saturday 20th August, 11.00-16.o0 hrs. Discover how holiday makers of the past had fun on a budget.  Enjoy a day of activities, performance, talks, and good old-fashioned seaside fun.    Meet the swing-dancing group and see them performing at the museum, doing demonstrations and workshops.

All events at the Time and Tide Museum are included in admission ticket price: adults £4.80, concession £4.10, adult in a family group £4,  young person (4-16)  £3.50, children under 4 free.

Lunchtime Recitals

Admission to the Wednesday lunchtime recitals at St. Nicholas Parish Church is free, though after each recital a retiring collection will be taken in aid of the organ fund for those who wish to make a donation.  Light refreshments are available at the Visitors’ Centre but visitors are encouraged to bring their lunch to eat whilst enjoying the music.   The recitals are given between 12.30 pm to 1.15 pm on the following Wednesdays:
