Treasure Island at Gorleston Pavilion

Gorleston Theatre Company are presenting a pantomime with a difference – Treasure Island – directed by Marilyn Durant with David Emmerson as assistant director. The show will be at Gorleston Pavilion from 11th -14th January 2012 7.30 pm with matinees 14-15th at 2.00 pm, tickets £11.0o adults, £9 concessions and £6 children. Gorleston Pavilion is attempting to raise approximately £100,000 in order to qualify for a £1million Heritage grant that will allow this original Edwardian building to be refurbished and restored.

Gorleston Pavilion needs all the help it can get and whilst the Restoration Fund Volunteers do a superb job at setting up and running numerous fundraising events throughout the year, there’s plenty more that can be done. To find out more and how to become a friend click here.

50th anniversary festival

On the night of the 24th June 1942, St. Nicholas Church was destroyed by German incendiary bombs, leaving only its walls and towers standing. It was left derelict until 1957 when re-construction began. This was completed in 1961. The church was re-consecrated on 8th May 1961, being the Eve of the Feast of the Translation of St. Nicholas. From 8th May to 16th May 2011 there will be an exhibition in the church of its destruction and reconstruction, presented by Great Yarmouth College of Further Education.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the re-construction of St. Nicholas Church, Great Yarmouth, the St.Nicholas Church Preservation Trust will be holding a festival from 6th-16th May, presenting the following events at the church:

Friday, 6th May, 19.30 hrs. 1940s Music Night with Annie Slater, Roger Cooke and friends . Tickets £10, bar and raffle

Sunday 6th May, Civic Service at 11.00 a.m. followed by buffet lunch at 12.30 p.m. (pre-ordered ticket event £10, under sixteen £5) and a Musical Entertainment with the Dragon’s Stage School at 2.00 p.m. Festal Choral Evensong will be at 3.00 p.m.

Tuesday, 10th May, 6.30 p.m. Yarmouth Quizz and answers to Treasure Hunt. Bar and raffle. Tickets £10 includes buffet, under sixteens £5. The treasure hunt around the historic centre of Yarmouth to be done in previous week in own time, question papers available from church from 3rd May 10.00-12.00 hrs and Brahams in Market Row or tel. 01493 843647.

Thursday 12th May, 7.30 p.m. Reminiscences of the Herring Fishery and musical interludes with Ernie Childs . Bar and raffle. Tickets £10 includes fish and chips.

Friday 13th May, 7.30 p.m. Traditional Jazz with Redbeans ‘n’ Rice. Bar and raffle. Tickets £10.

Saturday 14th May, 11.00 a.m. Tour and illustrated talk on the history of St. Nicholas Church with Paul Davies. Tickets £3, under sixteens £1, includes coffee and cake.

Sunday 15th May, 6.30 p.m. Choral Evensong

Monday 16th May, 7.30 p.m. Concert in conjunction with Norfolk and Norwich Festival: Harry Winstanley, flute, Jonathan Wiseman, guitar, from the Royal Academy of Music. Programme includes CPE Bach, Takemitsu, Dodgson and Bartok. Tickets £7

Parablenalia “The Circus of Life”

A Production based on some Parables from the Bible. Music written and composed by Carol and Paul Clayton. It comprises, hilarious sketches, dancers, gymnasts, a large choir and numerous musicians. All Profits to benefit two charities, ie; Water Aid and East Coast Hospice. This promises to be an exciting show. Tickets are selling fast.

Parablenalia explained

The team of people who brought Blessed Be to you in 2008 have decided to take the time and effort to repeat the process with a new show entitled Parablenalia “The Circus of Life”. The choir, actors and stage team have arrived to the rehearsals from many different walks of life; some from churches in the area, a factor which we consider vital to the success of the show. The script has been written by Rachel Clarke and the music by Carol Clayton with dancers from the Norfolk Academy of Dance.

The motivation behind the show is to provide the audience and participants with an enjoyable but thought-provoking evening of entertainment at Gorleston Pavilion from the 16^th to the 19^th March at 7.30pm. The title Parablenalia explains the roots of the storyline; some parables have been adapted from Bible stories, others are freshly-written, exclusively for Parablenalia and provide sometimes a light-hearted insight into ourselves and the way we approach life, others are deeply thought provoking and allow us to consider our role in helping others. The charities which will benefit from the entire profits of the show are the East Coast Hospice and WaterAid. The East Coast Hospice is an independent local charity aiming to build an inpatient hospice combined with a day care centre close to the A12 between Gorleston and Lowestoft which will serve the people of the Great Yarmouth and Waveney area. WaterAid uses practical solutions to provide clean water, safe sanitation and hygiene education to the world’s poorest people The sketches in the show link to the charities of choice; in the case of WaterAid we see the problems faced by those people who urgently need help from charities like WaterAid, and for the East Coast Hospice a very moving sketch portrays the responsibilities of the carer which acknowledges the vital role they play. The main theme which is carried throughout the show is that we can all make a difference and the actors are repeatedly throwing this out as a challenge to members of the audience.

With numbers apparently declining in many churches in the area, this show aims to bring Church out from the church building and provide an opportunity to examine some aspects of the Church and other Christian faiths by providing an entertaining and enjoyable show which has a strong take home message of “make a difference” which is surely the main aim of many faiths and religions?

Sleeping Beauty

The Gorleston Theatre Company is presenting the fairytale pantomime, Sleeping Beauty, directed by John Hawkes, at the Gorleston Pavilion from the 19th – 23rd January. King Cornelius and Queen Phashionella had almost forgotten that, on the Princess Beauty’s sixteenth birthday, the evil witch Deadly Nightshade’s curse would come true and the princess will die.

What happens next is the magic of traditional pantomime at its best. See the spectacular U.V. black theatre scene and the Witch, transforming herself in a dragon to fight the noble Prince.

As the Court falls asleep and dreams of times of old in a off land and enjoy all the fun and games this year’s pantomime.

Alan Bennett’s brilliantly funny play The History Boys is being staged at the Gorleston Pavilion Theatre from the 4th – 6th March 2010.

Des Barrit, who took part in the National Tour and is playing the role of Hector, will be taking a master class.

Sheilagh Pascall is directing this performance and is looking for a bunch of bright, funny and enthusiastic individuals to take on the roles of the History Boys.

Drama workshop for young people

Dragons Stage and Theatre School will be running its seventh summer workshop at Caister High School Arts College from 27th to 31st July and 10th – 14th August, 9.30 am – 4.00 p.m. The workshop is open to all children aged between eight and sixteen who can attend either or both weeks. Each week costs £65.00. This year’s workshop will focus on theatre with an American twist and the children will create a presentation for the end of the workshop followed by a party.
