Dragons Saturday school
The school runs several drama workshops for young people.
SATURDAY WORKSHOPS
The children spend a good proportion of each term in preparation for their ‘end of year’ presentations. These shows, for families and friends, form a structure to the group’s work along with producing variety in their weekly exercises and projects. Each year, in July, the school performs a two hour summer show, based on the work that has been undertaken and a Christmas Show which follows a more traditional, seasonal theme. As well as preparation for the shows, the Saturday Workshops have a more subtle learning objective to encourage confidence building among all the members. This is encouraged rather than `taught’, with each child guided to achieve at their own pace through the use of dance exercises, and drama activities.
SUNDAY PRODUCTION CLASS
The DRAGONS School prides itself on the increasing standards of its main annual productions. To give some of the children the opportunity of working in front of a ‘real’ audience, which includes the general public, the school organises at least one and usually two major productions each year. These may include a drama based play with a relatively small cast, such as ‘The Snow Queen’ or ‘A Little Princess’ or much larger productions such as ‘Bugsy Malone’ or Emerald City. Different styles of classes, whether they are workshops or production rehearsals are preferred by different children. Some will do both, or indeed will undertake several classes each week, and our variable fee system makes this more affordable for parents or guardians. There are currently a few vacancies in the cast of our 2009 production of ‘NARNIA!’. This is a new play with songs, although the ability to sing is not a necessity and we would welcome newcomers to contact us for more details. (5 years to 16 years)
TUESDAY ‘ENCHANTED’ SINGING GROUP
Although principally a drama based school that teaches dance and singing, the pupils that attend after school on Tuesdays use a variety of popular music to practice singing and movement. This is a small, informal class that encourages it’s young people to try a new skill or develop an existing one. We do not require an ability to sing well, as a pre-requisite for joining in this class, just an enjoyment of performing, whether this has been done previously in front of a microphone or a hairbrush! At the end of a term we normally give our ‘Enchanted’ students the chance to sing on stage during the productions. New members are always welcome to join! (9-14 years)
WEDNESDAY PRODUCTION/DRAMA GROUP
This group produces at least one major musical/play each year involving a two hour evening class and occasional Sunday rehearsals.
