Lardal Kantori Norwegian Choir concert

As part of the much loved Norwegian contribution to the Christmas Fayre running from 2nd – 4th December, the Lardal Kantori Choir will performing at St. Nicholas Church on Saturday 3rd December starting at 7.30 pm. The 35 strong mixed choir will be accompanied by soloists Filip Haakestad and Gjeril Songvoll, a talented soprano and a lead performer at last years Oslo Opera Festival. Gorleston Community Choir

The 90 strong Gorleston Community Choir will be commemorating Jackie Whiting, the choir’s founder, with a Christmas Celebration at St. Andrews Church on 9th December, 2011 starting 7.30 pm. Jackie Whiting, who was an active member of the church and founded the choir in 2009, died in September 2011 after a short illness. Her son Christopher has taken over as musical director and this concert which features carols and seasonal music. Entrance is £5 and tickets are on sale at St. Andrew’s Church Officer (Tuesdays and Thursday 9-12.30 pm, Wednesdays 2-5 pm and Fridays 9.3 pm) or phone 01493 656078.

Swinging with the Big Band

Best of Brass at the Hippodrome

The Salvation Army Brass Band event is being held at the Hippodrome Circus on the 28th October, 2011, starting at 7.30 pm. It is a popular event and this is its third year running. This year’s programme will feature popular marches and works, including Karl Jenkins’ powerful Benedictus from his Mass of Peace. Funds are being raised for Herbie’s Drop in Centre at the Great Yarmouth Citadel and the Palliative Care East appeal. Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra at Hippodrome

Wednesday 11th May is a big day for Great Yarmouth and the Norfolk and Norwich Festival as in the evening there will a wonderful performance from one of Eastern Europe’s great orchestras, the Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra, performing three Russian masterpieces at the historic Hippodrome at 7.30pm as part of the programme. Also on Wednesday 11th May SeaChange Arts presents Gramoulinophone by French Street Arts Company 2 Rien Merci as part of the Norfolk and Norwich Festival 2011 programme. Since its creation in 1999, the company have explored the odd world of clown-like language as they combine the traditions of street arts and contemporary circus.

Inside a beautiful yurt tent, three mysterious characters perform contemporary circus tricks and physical comedy with a few surprises thrown in! Come and discover the secret of the Gramoulinophone in Great Yarmouth Market place at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 5pm. Entry to the show is free but there is limited seating inside the tent so make sure you arrive at least 10 minutes before the show to get your tickets.

“Gramoulinophone is a unique and comedic show and we are very excited to host it in Great Yarmouth as part of the Norfolk and Norwich festival programme,” said Joe Mackintosh, Chief Executive of SeaChange Arts. “This is the beginning of a long term relationship with the Norfolk and Norwich festival where we will work in partnership to promote high quality art outdoor arts, with a particular focus on street arts and circus, across the county.”

Gilbert and Sullivan Concert

The Great Yarmouth Gilbert and Sullivan Society are presenting a concert, ‘Patience’, ‘The Mikado’ and songs from other works, at two venues in Great Yarmouth. The first peformance will be at Christchurch at 7.30 p.m. on the 2nd April and at the second at St. Luke’s Cobholm at 7.00 p.m. on the 11th June. Tickets £5.00 (Children Free – Under 16 Accompanied by a responsible adult) from Allens Music Centre, Market Gates, Great Yarmouth and on the door.

50th anniversary festival

On the night of the 24th June 1942, St. Nicholas Church was destroyed by German incendiary bombs, leaving only its walls and towers standing. It was left derelict until 1957 when re-construction began. This was completed in 1961. The church was re-consecrated on 8th May 1961, being the Eve of the Feast of the Translation of St. Nicholas. From 8th May to 16th May 2011 there will be an exhibition in the church of its destruction and reconstruction, presented by Great Yarmouth College of Further Education.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the re-construction of St. Nicholas Church, Great Yarmouth, the St.Nicholas Church Preservation Trust will be holding a festival from 6th-16th May, presenting the following events at the church:

Friday, 6th May, 19.30 hrs. 1940s Music Night with Annie Slater, Roger Cooke and friends . Tickets £10, bar and raffle

Sunday 6th May, Civic Service at 11.00 a.m. followed by buffet lunch at 12.30 p.m. (pre-ordered ticket event £10, under sixteen £5) and a Musical Entertainment with the Dragon’s Stage School at 2.00 p.m. Festal Choral Evensong will be at 3.00 p.m.

Tuesday, 10th May, 6.30 p.m. Yarmouth Quizz and answers to Treasure Hunt. Bar and raffle. Tickets £10 includes buffet, under sixteens £5. The treasure hunt around the historic centre of Yarmouth to be done in previous week in own time, question papers available from church from 3rd May 10.00-12.00 hrs and Brahams in Market Row or tel. 01493 843647.

Great Yarmouth Spring Festival 2010, St. Nicholas Parish Church

The St. Nicholas Parish Church Preservation Trust has organised a Spring Festival to raise funds for the £750,000 repair to the organ and the tower pinnacles. Donations are always welcome and can be made on-line to www.sncpt.co.uk

Czech National Symphony Orchestra at the Hippodrome

If you have missed any of the International Concert Series at the Hippodrome, here is chance to catch up on that very great pleasure. Great Yarmouth is incredibly fortunate to be able to host the wonderful orchestras that have contributed to this series organised by SeaChange Arts. It is a visual as well as oral feast to attend these superb performances in such a unique and atmospheric setting.

The Czech National Symphony Orchestra will be performing at the Hippodrome on Thursdsay 4th February. The programme includes Smetana, Bruch and Dvorak (Symphony No.9, the New World Symphony). Libor Pešek and Petr Altrichter are conducting.

Tickets are extraordinarily reasonable for this great event – £6 children and £12 up to £28 adults – and are still available from the Hippodrome on 01493 844172 or online here.

Gorleston St. Andrew’s Competitive Festival

Now enjoying its 40th year, the Gorleston St. Andrew’s Competitive Festival has become renowned for its friendly atmosphere. It is run by volunteers and is a registered charity, affiliated to the British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech.

The festival, which takes place at St. Andrew’s Church Chapter House on Church Road in Gorleston, provides a platform for performance of the Arts for amateurs of all ages and abilities. Classes include instrumentalists, singers, choirs, orchestras and ensembles, speech, drama and compostition.

The dates for this year’s festival are 8th-20th March 2010 and the closing date for entries is January 31st. Syllabus and entry forms are provided on the website or by phone to 01493 601740, also available at libraries and Allen’s Music Shop.

This year the festival is also celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Gorleston Millenium Manuscript Poetry Reading Classes with a reading of selected poems from the manuscript. There will also be a Folk Workshop and Ceilidh on 12th March 2010, guided by Laura Cannell.
