50th anniversary festival

On the night of the 24th June 1942, St. Nicholas Church was destroyed by German incendiary bombs, leaving only its walls and towers standing. It was left derelict until 1957 when re-construction began. This was completed in 1961. The church was re-consecrated on 8th May 1961, being the Eve of the Feast of the Translation of St. Nicholas. From 8th May to 16th May 2011 there will be an exhibition in the church of its destruction and reconstruction, presented by Great Yarmouth College of Further Education.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the re-construction of St. Nicholas Church, Great Yarmouth, the St.Nicholas Church Preservation Trust will be holding a festival from 6th-16th May, presenting the following events at the church:

Friday, 6th May, 19.30 hrs. 1940s Music Night with Annie Slater, Roger Cooke and friends . Tickets £10, bar and raffle

Sunday 6th May, Civic Service at 11.00 a.m. followed by buffet lunch at 12.30 p.m. (pre-ordered ticket event £10, under sixteen £5) and a Musical Entertainment with the Dragon’s Stage School at 2.00 p.m. Festal Choral Evensong will be at 3.00 p.m.

Tuesday, 10th May, 6.30 p.m. Yarmouth Quizz and answers to Treasure Hunt. Bar and raffle. Tickets £10 includes buffet, under sixteens £5. The treasure hunt around the historic centre of Yarmouth to be done in previous week in own time, question papers available from church from 3rd May 10.00-12.00 hrs and Brahams in Market Row or tel. 01493 843647.

Thursday 12th May, 7.30 p.m. Reminiscences of the Herring Fishery and musical interludes with Ernie Childs . Bar and raffle. Tickets £10 includes fish and chips.

Friday 13th May, 7.30 p.m. Traditional Jazz with Redbeans ‘n’ Rice. Bar and raffle. Tickets £10.

Saturday 14th May, 11.00 a.m. Tour and illustrated talk on the history of St. Nicholas Church with Paul Davies. Tickets £3, under sixteens £1, includes coffee and cake.

Sunday 15th May, 6.30 p.m. Choral Evensong

Monday 16th May, 7.30 p.m. Concert in conjunction with Norfolk and Norwich Festival: Harry Winstanley, flute, Jonathan Wiseman, guitar, from the Royal Academy of Music. Programme includes CPE Bach, Takemitsu, Dodgson and Bartok. Tickets £7

Creative Arts East are presenting a 10 day festival of theatre and comedy in the Waveney District from 10th -19th March 2011.

Events in the vicinity of Great Yarmouth include The Signalman, Common Ground Theatre Company, Tuesday 15th March, 7.30 p.m. Blundeston Village Hall, NR32 5AT and Friday, 18th March, 7.30 p.m. St. James Village Hall, South Elmham, IP19 0JA. “Common Ground bring physical theatre, music, storytelling and humuor to the classic ghost stories of Charles Dickens, including this spine tingling tale, The Signalman.” Free entry, donations welcome.

Dene’s Dad’s Ducks, Dean Parkin, is on Saturday 12th March, 7.30 p.m. at Lound Village Hall, NR32 5LL. Tickets adult £4, children £2, booking: 01502 731605. “Stories, poems and songs about bubble wrap, swan machines and lemon tress on trains. Funny, bittersweet journeys with a dodgy Dad and his flotilla of plucky ducks.”

Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September 2009, St George’s Park , Great Yarmouth.

This year OutThere will have an amazing array of public performances, spectacular street shows, live music, theatre, circus, international food stalls, and lots of workshops and activities for everyone to get involved in. To find out more click here to view the Out There website.

SeaChange Arts is looking for people who can spare some time to volunteer and help deliver this exciting event in Great Yarmouth. There are many opportunities to get involved including: marketing, hospitality, runners, backstage support,stewarding, reviews.

Team East for Skills opportunity

Creative Arts East is overseeing the delivery of this volunteering into employment scheme in Norfolk and Suffolk and the first Norfolk-based project will take place in Great Yarmouth, managed by SeaChange Arts. This is an opportunity to participate in a 35 hour course in Events Management and Technical Production for Open Air Events.

The course is for people 16 yrs+ who are out of work and not already in training and offers basic introduction in running and managing an outdoor event, including stewarding, stage management, technical and sound. Participants will be working with an experienced tutor. The deadline for registering interest is 9th July, 2009. Bridget Heriz at Framlingham Summer Festival

: Open Studio Invitation

Bridget is sharing an Open Studio event with the printmaker Jude Lockie as part of the 2009 Framlingham Summer Festival. The studio will be open for the weekend 27th -28th June and Bridget will be attending for the day on Sunday 28th 10.-17.oo hrs. The studio is at 22-24 Fore Street, Framlingham, IP13 9DF (rear of Fine Design). The whole festival runs from 26th June-5th July (with Julian Lloyd Webber performing at Framlingham College on Friday 3rd July).

Jude and Bridget first worked together when they initiated the group Bearing 090 to arrange exhibitions and exchanges abroad. The group exchanged with the Belgian Group Quinconce in 1995 and later exhibited in Finland and participated in the VI International Exhibition in St. Petersburg. Bruer Tidman was one of the members along with Tony Casement, Judy Foster, Esmond Bingham, Pris Forrest and Gary Wornell. Jude studied printmaking in Japan and has work in this year ‘s Royal Academy Show.

Out There Festival 2009

Following on from last year’s “Out There” International Festival, SeaChange Arts has been awarded funding to the tune of nearly one million Euros to develop the festival over the next three years. Half the funding has come from the EU under the EU Inter-regional Programme, which means SeaChange is working with partners from Amiens, a town North of Paris, the lead partner for the project, Rouen and an organisation which runs projects throughout Britanny. In England the partners with SeaChange are the Winchester Hat Fair, Brighton Festival, Zap Art and Southampton City Council. The Great Yarmouth Borough Council is supporting the project along with other funders to complete the match funding.

Plans are already under way for this year’s “Out There” which will take place over the weekend of 19th and 20th September. The festival will focus on street arts and be centred around St.George’s Park. French tightrope walker Didier Pasquette will be walking across roof tops on the seafront and community groups are already getting involved in the carnival style opening parade on the Saturday morning.

Last year the first international Out There festival saw more than 100 performers and artists from Britain, France, Finland, Brazil, Spain, Uruguay, Cuba, Portugal and Belgium take part to entertain the public in various venues in Great Yarmouth. For more information go to www.outtherefestival.com.
