We are once again able to offer people who live in the Borough of Great Yarmouth the fantastic opportunity of 4 workshops working with Marc Woodhead, an artist attached to the National Gallery. All the workshops will be held at The Priory Centre.

The National Gallery has funding to provide these free workshops, and lunch, to those whose names are selected (everyone has a fair chance as we draw the names from a hat). The National Gallery provide all necessary materials.

It is open to all who are interested; you do not have to be a professional artist. You MUST however be over 50 and either unemployed or have a long term health condition.

The theme for the workshops is: “A Different Perspective”

“Inspired by the paintings in the National Gallery Collection, we will look at the ways painters have depicted architectural interior spaces. We will explore the ways that artists from Renaissance Florence (eg. Masaccio) drew with a system of one point perspective, and contrast with artists from Renaissance Siena (eg. Giovanni di Paolo) who used multi view point compositions in order to create a bigger and more complex sense of space.

All participants will have the opportunity to create drawings and a large multi view point painting of the wonderful Gothic Priory Hall in Great Yarmouth.

We will discuss different styles of painting, observing the sketchy and atmospheric brushwork, and colours in the work of the Post Impressionists, eg. Edgar Degas.

We will also look at the extraordinary light filled interiors and stretched perspective of painters from the Golden Age of Dutch 17th Century Painting eg. Pieter Saenredam.”

The dates are; 13, 14, 20, 21 March 2012 (Tuesdays and Wednesdays). You must be able to attend all the sessions.

Please email here to request an application form which must be completed & returned to Rachael Hardie by 29th February 2012, the draw for places will take place on 1st of March. If you have not heard by 10th March please assume you have not been given a place.

Please do not hesitate to contact Rachael if you have any queries: rachael-hardie@gyctrust.co.uk

Norfolk County Council has launched a fund to help residents to come together to mark a number of major events taking place during 2012. The council is making a pot of £30,000 available for the ‘Norfolk Year of Celebrations 2012 Fund’, which community groups or organisations and town and parish councils can bid for a maximum of £500 from, to help mark the following sporting and cultural occasions:

- the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Weekend (June 2 to 5).

- the Olympic Torch being run through Norfolk as part of the London 2012 Torch Relay (July 4 and 5).

- the Paralympic Torch Festival (August 28 and 29).

- the final weekend of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad (September 8 and 9).

- the planned return of the Tour of Britain cycle race (date to be confirmed in September).

The fund will help support costs associated directly with staging and promoting the event or activity, with Norfolk County Council looking for events and activities that are community focussed, accessible and open to everyone, which engage volunteers and leave a positive legacy.

The council are especially looking for activities that are new and add value to existing activity.

To help those interested in submitting an application for funding, Norfolk County Council has also produced an Event Planner. The event planner covers the first steps to take when beginning to plan an event, followed by a timeline of things to do as the event date draws closer. Further useful guidance found within the handbook ranges from accessing funding, to organising road closures and licences, through to undertaking risk assessments and marketing an event. Finally, the handbook stresses the importance of effectively evaluating an event in order to help with future planning.

Both the application form for funding from ‘Norfolk’s Year of Celebrations 2012 Fund’ and the Event Planner can be downloaded by visiting www.norfolk.gov.uk/events2012

The deadline for the first round of funding for ‘Norfolk’s Year of Celebrations 2012 Fund’ is Friday February 24, with the closing date for the second round on Friday April 27.
