Olympics Art Competition for young people

Children across Norfolk are being given the chance to take part in an Olympics inspired competition that could see their work displayed at a city art gallery.

Norfolk County Council is organising the London 2012 art competition, which will see winning works displayed at Norwich’s Castle Museum.

The competition is open to all children and young people in the county and those successful in each category will also win an artist for a day, who will visit their school. Selected pieces will also be displayed in the county’s mobile libraries.

There are three categories, broken down into each school key stage. They are:

* Works that represents one of the Olympic and Paralympic values (excellence, friendship, respect, courage, determination, quality and inspiration).

* Works that represent an Olympian or Paralympian, past or present.

* Works on the theme of the Olympic torch relay, which is scheduled to pass through Norfolk.

Children and young people can enter art in any media, as long as it is two-dimensional and in A4, A3 or A2.

The competition closes on Friday 22 March 2012 and judging will be done by staff from Norfolk County Council’s Children’s and Community Services departments and Joseph Ballard from the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games.

The winners in each category will have their work displayed at the Castle’s Art Gallery in the summer term, ahead of the opening of the London Olympics.

Alison Thomas, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services at Norfolk County Council, said: “This competition gives children and young people across the county the opportunity to have their work displayed in a public art gallery, meaning they will be seen by visitors from across the county, country and even overseas. It also gives schools and their pupils a chance to capture the spirit of the Games, think about its history, its purpose and the significance of having such a high profile event in their home nation.

“We are keen for schools to use the many educational opportunities the Olympic and Paralympic Games present across the curriculum, whether it is sport, art, maths, English or citizenship. The values of the Games are attributes we should all aspire to and qualities that we want to see in all of Norfolk’s children and young people. We hope that schools will embrace this competition and would urge as many young people as possible to take part.”

PAPERCUTTING – ideas from Poland,  Sunday 26th February 10.30am- 3.30pm
There will be rural crafts, photographs and Paper cuts by village ladies to explore, with a few words by Elisabeth about ancient beliefs, and with music. We will then be cutting Colourful images inspired by these old traditions after a demonstration, its not difficult and fun, ages 15 to 70+ welcome. Fee £12 includes all art materials. Aborigine DOTS & Lines inspired Painting, Sunday 18th March 10.30-4pm
Everybody can try this; we’ll view reproductions of various old and more recent paintings from Australia, chat about old traditions, do a brief Meditation, and then make our Own Dream images. 100% Norfolk

A show about the population of Norfolk… starring the population of Norfolk.  And you could be part of it!

We’re on the hunt for 100 men, women and children from across Norfolk to take part in performances of 100% Norfolk during the 2012 Norfolk & Norwich Festival.  But we’re not looking for just any 100 people.

Together, they need to be as representative of the county’s total population of 862,000 as possible. So, with 51% of the county’s population being female, we need to find 51 women and girls to take part. Other criteria will include age, location and place of birth, so by the time we’ve found our cast of 100, it will accurately represent the make-up of the entire population of Norfolk.

As well as individuals, we are also interested in groups or clubs taking part together. It will be a great opportunity for you to share your particular interest or skill and don’t worry you do not need to have experience of being on stage either.

The 100% Norfolk cast will then come together to create a unique show, combining personal stories and revealing insights into what it’s like to live in Norfolk in 2012. A must for anyone who loves the place they call home, 100% Norfolk will be an illuminating and uplifting celebration of our county and our people.

Find the Lowestoft Lowry!

Artists are invited to submit one or two pieces of creative work for an exhibition in the Lowestoft Arts Centre Gallery and other venues in the Old Lowestoft High Street to coincide with the Lowestoft Easter Arts Festival.

Guidelines –
1. Any art or craft medium including textiles and 3D.
2. Any subject, any style as long as it relates to some aspect of life in Norfolk or Suffolk . (You don’t have to paint like Lowry!)
3. Work must be original and the property of the artist.
4. Wall hung work must be ready to hang on the hanging system by a secure cord and in new condition. Unframed canvases are acceptable.
5. Hanging fee £1 per artist. Please label all work clearly on the back.
6. Work should preferably be for sale and will be subject to one third commission deducted from the sale price if sold.
7. The Organisers reserve the right to refuse a piece of work if for any reason it is not suitable for exhibition.

Celebrate Gorleston

Richard and Tom Harrison have published their book ‘Celebrate Gorleston’  which centres on the connection between the Gorleston Pageant of 1908 and the Millenium Manuscript project of 2000, which Tom was involved in.  The book, which is over 100pp long and is in full colour,  features many previously unpublished images. NORWICH HARP FESTIVAL

As many of you will be aware by now, the first annual Norwich Harp Festival will shortly be upon us. It is being held at Thorpe St. Andrew School, 3rd March. This is not just for students as anybody can come along and listen to the participants, look at some beautiful harps, or just attend the afternoon recital by our esteemed adjudicator, Danielle Perrett.

The morning will kick off at 10am on 3rd March, with 5 classes ranging from beginners through to some rather advanced students. These classes will be critiqued by Danielle and each participant will receive a certificate to commemorate their involvement. We will have a short break for lunch (unfortunately not provided) then in the afternoon Danielle will play a selection of pieces to include the UK premiere of a new Harp Sonata by Stewart Green.

We are very lucky to be able to include this, and Stewart has kindly offered to be present on the day to sign copies of his books, many of which the students will have used. We also have the generous support of Pilgrim Harps at the event, who will be available to perform servicing and repairs on students’ harps. Please let me know if you would like your harp looked at.
