On Monday 25th June, in the early hours, it will be 70 years since the total destruction of the interior of St. Nicholas Church by a German bombing raid. For the next 19 years the church remained a desolate ruin in the midst of the town until it was re-opened in 1961, after Stephen Dykes Bower’s internal restoration. This terrible tragedy touched the lives of many in the town.
To commemorate the destruction a special choral evensong will take place in Great Yarmouth Minster on Sunday 24th June at 6.30 pm. in the presence of the Mayor of Great Yarmouth. The service will be taken from the Book of Common Prayer Book, in use at the time of the bombing, along with some beautiful music, sung by the choir, suitable for the occasion. Local inhabitants will relate memories of that awful night when the heart of the town was destroyed. All are welcome to attend this unique commemoration of an important event in the town’s life.
