The Annual Exhibition of The Great Yarmouth Guild of Artists and Craftsmen is currently showing in the Exhibition Galleries at Great Yarmouth Central library. The exhibition runs until Saturday 31st July, 2010. It is a lively exhibition, showing 159 works in different media by 40 members. Barrie Woods, who serves on the Committee of the Guild, says that the Guild is going from strength to strength thanks to its initiative in setting up a gallery in one of retail units in Victoria Arcade to showcase the work of its members. There have been over 8,000 visitors since the gallery opened and the Arcade management team have been very supportive as the gallery has contributed towards the regeneration of the Arcade. The initiative has also encouraged new members, with the result that membership is currently at its maximum of 80, so that application for membership is closed just for the moment.

You may be aware that the Department for Culture, Media and Sport recently announced a consultation on the return of the lottery shares to their original causes.
If agreed by Parliament, this would re-balance the share of the lottery, restoring arts, heritage and sport shares to their original 20% each by 2012.
This is a very positive move for the arts and I would like to encourage you to respond to the consultation document. It’s vital that Government hears directly from front line arts organisations about how the distinct benefits of additional lottery funding would help you to deliver your work on the ground. Your views are particularly valuable in light of the reductions to public funding we know are coming in future years, and which will make the lottery contribution to the arts all the more important.
The consultation proposes re-balancing lottery shares in two stages, returning 18% each to arts, heritage and sports by April 2011, and to 20% by April 2012. This would eventually reduce the share currently held by the Big Lottery Fund to 40%.
Details of the consultation can be found on the DCMS website at www.dcms.gov.uk/consultations/7070.aspx. The consultation closes on 21 August.

There are six students involved in the exciting Transitions project. We have been to the Great Yarmouth archives and have selected artworks/images that will inspire our responses to the contemporary view of the Great Yarmouth and Gorleston area. Several students have already identified areas of interest and Enya and Ellen have interviewed members of the public in Great Yarmouth to gain their views on the area. Enya is interested in looking at the contrast between the natural environment and the built environment while looking at and being inspired by the local artist Anthony Aimies. If anyone has any background information of him please add a comment.
Jack is intersted in textiles and fashion and has made an appointment at Carrow House to look at the collection. At the moment Jack is interested in Victorian costumes.
Hannah is interested in the equipment and clothing worn by lifeboat men in the past and the present day.
Charlotte is intersted in beach huts and textured wood. We are interested in learning what type of belongings people keep in their beach huts.
Ellen is looking for found objects – found on the beach or are marine related for an installation. Any one with any artefacts or driftwood etc would be appreciated.
Alissa is interested in photographs and local trades and trades people. How traditional trades compare with modern trades.
Anyone with any comments or images that they can share with us to help us with our research would be greatly appreciated. Please contact us by comemnt. Thank you.

Thinking about the sad demise of Great Yarmouth School of Art, it is interesting to see how a campaign in Ipswich to reuse the old art school building has come at last to a successful conclusion. On Friday 9 July, a major new art space located in the former Ipswich Art School will be launched by a unique collaboration with the Saatchi Gallery.
The opening show, The Saatchi Gallery at Ipswich Art School, will show the work of Will Ryman, Matthew Monahan, Thomas Houseago, Alexandra Bircken, Andy Yoder, Francis Upritchard and Rebecca Warren.
The loan from the Saatchi Gallery aims to boost Ipswich’s bid to establish itself as a regional contemporary arts hub and set the stage for a major fund-raising campaign to purchase the building by winning support from businesses and community leaders. Saatchi hope that the former Art School will once again have a strong educational reach. A Gallery spokeswoman said: “We hope that the many schools that visit the Saatchi Gallery in London will be encouraged to visit the new museum in Ipswich to enable even more students to see contemporary art first-hand on a regular basis.”
Like Great Yarmouth Art School, Ipswich Art School was a leading centre of creativity until its closure in 1996. Now Ipswich Council and its partners in Colchester wish to re-establish links with emerging artists at local universities, colleges and in the wider community.
The new Art School Gallery will be run by Colchester & Ipswich Museums Service.
